Eastern Black Swallowtail

The Eastern Black Swallowtail can be found in open spaces and is seldom seen in the woods. It likes parsley and carrot plants, as well as phlox and milkweed. This particular butterfly was flitting around at Phinizy Swamp one day back in 2005 when I was walking out there. There is a similar looking butterfly called the Ozark Swallowtail, (photos of which can be seen here at this neat site called "Zipcode Zoo") that inhabits the forest; its caterpillars feed on meadow parsnip. There is another similar species, called the Kahli Swallowtail that can be found in Manitoba and Saskatchewan that likes to fly around bare hilltops where the females lay their eggs on cow parsnip.

Check out this nice slideshow of the Eastern Black Swallowtail Caterpillar., and a nice set of pictures including one of an adult just out of its chrysallis.

Update: Apparently the Kahli Swallowtail is no longer considered to be its own distinct species. From the information that I'm finding on the internet, it seems that what was formerly called the Kahli Swallowtail is actually the dark offspring of an interbreeding that frequently occurs between the Black Swallowtail and the Old World Swallowtail. Cool!

Cicada Wrap

Garden Spider wraps a cicada along the Phinizy Swamp trail.
22 September 2005

This was an amazing sight. If you know how big cicadas are,
you will have an appreciation for the size of this spider. I
wasn't able to achieve great focus with my little camera, but
this picture captures the action and the energy of this age-old
struggle quite well.

A picture of a turtle in hand...

Is worth a thousand words and 3 turtles in the bush.

This little terrapin was rescued from a busy street and placed in a turtle-friendly location at Phinizy Swamp.

Velvet Ant (Wasp)

A velvet ant (which is actually a wingless female wasp of the family Mutillidae) spotted moving hurriedly in zig-zag patterns (which are very hard to follow with a camera) across the hiking trail at Phinizy Swamp.

Metallic Green Wasp Preening

In this picture you can see this wasp preening its wings.
It appears from this picture that the wings are being held beneath the rear leg pair.

Metallic Green Wasp - Phinizy Swamp

This wasp was walking along the top of a wooden walkway that crosses the swamp. I was lucky enough to get a picture of this wasp preening. This is the wasp standing in its normal position. In the next picture, its wings are pushed down by the rear legs to a level below the abdomen.

Grasshopper Guide

Grasshopper Guide - Phinizy Swamp - 04 June 2005

This grasshopper was guiding my path through Phinizy Swamp this evening. It seemed to be following me along my route, and at 3 different places where I had to decide which way to turn, it flew on up ahead of me as if to say: "This way! The good stuff is this way!" I chose to follow, and found many wonderful things. I was able to take some great nature shots which I will be sharing over the next few days. Thanks to this "grasshopper guide" for helping to make my time outdoors today exceptionally enjoyable.

Wasps in Phinizy Swamp - Close Up View

In the first picture (below) you can make out a few of these wasps under the lip in the top left hand corner of the section of fence in the foreground.

Wasps! Wasps! Everywhere!

I was walking through Phinizy Swamp today when I noticed something flying around the outer edge of this fence. I decided to get a closer look...

Phinizy Swamp in Augusta, GA

Phinizy Swamp is one of my favorite places to go for a nature hike.
